In this workshop participants will be given a brief introduction to concepts used in yoga. Participants will learn breathing strategies that they can teach to young children with and without disabilities. These strategies will help children with self-regulation and breath control. Specific yoga poses will be demonstrated, and participants will practice them so they will be able to use them with young children. Adaptations and accommodations will be provided to ensure equal participation for all children. Throughout this process participants will discover the purpose of the pose and how it relates to the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards and children’s overall development (Social, Emotional, Cognitive and Physical). This is a very interactive workshop and participants will spend the majority of their time learning appropriate yoga poses. There will be small group work, where participants will practice putting a few yoga poses together that they can use with children immediately. If time permits some partner poses will be demonstrated.
1. Participants will be able to demonstrate a minimum of 5 yoga poses they could use with children 2 to 8 years of age.
2. Participants will be able to identify a minimum of 3 benchmarks from the Illinois Early Learning & Development Standards (IELDS) that children demonstrate as they participate in a variety of yoga poses.
3. Participants will be able to demonstrate a minimum 2 breathing strategies that they can teach children.
